Emergency assistance of Tk 25 lakh has been provided from the central fund under the Ministry of Labor and Employment to pay the arrears of salaries and allowances of the workers and employees of Binni Garments who are members of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
State Minister for Labor Begum Mannujan Sufian handed over a check for Tk 2.5 million for emergency assistance to BGMEA and BKMEA leaders after the 69th meeting of the Tripartite Consultative Council (TCC) at a hotel in the capital on Wednesday (February 9th).
It was informed at that time that the factory was closed permanently on June 16 last year due to the death of the managing director of Binni Garments in Kamalapur, Dhaka. At the time of closure of the factory, the outstanding salary and allowance of the workers and employees stood at Tk. 1 crore 4 lakhs. Later, the owners and workers of the factory, the Directorate of Factory and Establishment Inspection, BGMEA leaders sold the machine equipment through a compromise meeting and the owner paid Tk 69 lakh. The remaining Tk 25 lakh from this assistance will be paid by the owner.
The fund was set up in 2015 under the Ministry of Labor for the welfare of workers in the 100% export-oriented garment industry in accordance with the provisions of Section 232 (3) of the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006 for 100% export-oriented industries. Since July 2016, zero point three percent of the total exports have been directly deposited in the central fund through Bangladesh Bank.
Since the inception of this fund, for the payment of arrears of salaries and allowances to the workers of closed factories as emergency assistance, 9 closed companies belonging to BGMEA have been paid Tk. Money financial assistance has been provided.
Member of Parliament and President of BKMEA Selim Osman, Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Employment. Elahane Elahi, Inspector General of the Department of Factory and Institutional Inspection. Nasir Uddin Ahmed, BGMEA Director ANM Saifuddin, Jatiya Sramik League President Nur Qutb Alam Mannan along with senior officials of the Ministry of Labor and leaders of various employers ‘and workers’ organizations were present.
