Journalists are holding human chain and protest rally against the torture of journalists at Survi-9 launch of Dhaka-Barisal waterway. The human chain was organized by Barisal Electronic Media Journalists Association in front of Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city on Wednesday (January 19) at 10:30 am.
Various professional organizations of journalists including Union of Journalists, Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabat Barisal Press Club, Photo Journalists Unity Forum expressed solidarity in the human chain.
The meeting was presided over by Firdaus Sohag, President of the Organizing Committee. Veteran journalists Manabendra Botbal, Saifur Rahman Mirwan, Murad Ahmed, SM Zakir Hossain, Rahat Khan, Kawsar Hossain Rana, Gias Uddin Sumon and other journalist leaders addressed the meeting.
At that time, the speakers said, the staff of the launch launched a disgusting attack on the passengers of Survi 9 launch recently. The staff of the launch also attacked Ruhul Amin of Channel Twenty Four and Dewan Mohan of Independent TV. Although two photojournalists filed a case with the police station in that incident, the police have not been able to arrest Mizan, the main accused in the case.
Speakers at the human chain complained that the police had given the accused a ticket to go around in public for money. If the culprits are not arrested immediately, there will be a big movement.
Several organizations of journalists including Barisal Electronic Media Journalist Association, Barisal Television Camera Journalist Association, Barisal Photo Journalist Association are participating in the human chain.
On the morning of January 9, Ruhul Amin, a cameraman on Gayle Channel 24, and Dewan Mohan, a cameraman on Independent Television, were attacked and beaten while recording a video of the launch staff attacking passengers on the Survi 9 launch.
