Pandora Papers: Pakistani politicians have squandered taxpayers’ money

The world has come to grips with the leaking of records of secret financial transactions of Rathi-Maharathis of the world. The Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), an organization of investigative journalists, and more than 150 news organizations have been searching for the secret documents for months.

ICIJ has been able to collect about 11.9 million confidential documents from 14 different legal and financial institutions. These documents contain illegal transactions, tax evasion, and offshore of the world’s top business and political leaders (a nominal company on paper abroad. It has no office or staff.) ) Contains confidential information about financial assets. The leaked information has also exposed the world’s top legal and financial institutions involved in the illegal channelization of money and the smuggling of ‘black money’ by creating fake institutions.

According to the ICIJ, the secret documents have led to a glittering industry that has helped the world’s richest, most powerful government officials and other elites hide trillions of dollars from tax authorities, lawyers and others.

The secret documents are as large as 2.94 terabytes, according to ICIJ. This year’s ‘Pandora Papers’ is even stronger than the financial record that was leaked to the Panama Papers half a decade ago.

Pandora Papers contains the names of leaders of different countries of the world. Several leaders of Pakistan’s ruling party have also spoken out. They have probably filled their pockets with people’s money. Some of these leaders are close to Prime Minister Imran Khan and are as big names as the current former cabinet leaders.

According to the ICIJ report, the black money earned through Imran Khan’s close confidants is kept as a secret asset through various companies and trusts. ICIJ has also revealed the names of these big powers. Among them are Imran Khan’s Finance Minister Shawkat Fayez Ahmed Tarin and his family, and Waqar Masood Khan, the son of Imran Khan’s former economic and revenue adviser. Also among the various offshore deals is PTI donor Arif Naqvi; Against whom there are cases of fraud in the United States.

Following the controversy surrounding the Pandora Papers, Prime Minister Imran Khan wrote on Twitter: They have amassed a fortune through corruption and tax evasion and smuggled it to places known as ‘tax havens’. ”

The UN Secretary-General’s panel, the FACTI, found that অফ 7 trillion in stolen wealth was stored in offshore tax havens.

However, the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has failed to take any effective action against the leaders named in the Pandora Papers except for that tweet. Rumors are circulating that Imran Khan is also involved in these leaks. Shortly before the leak, a spokesman for Imran Khan’s political party officially told the media that Imran Khan had no offshore organization. But his ministers and advisers have to be held accountable for having a name here. However, it is ironic that Imran Khan used the Panama Papers leaked effectively in 2016.

According to the Panama Papers, the children of then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have several luxury apartments in London. Imran Khan tried to use the leaked information against the then ruling family.

While campaigning on the issue, his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) staged nationwide protests and Imran Khan himself went on strike in front of the house of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. He demanded the resignation of Nawaz Sharif, accusing him of being involved in corruption. However, it is Pakistan’s military leadership whose financial scandals and corruption are often the subject of media headlines.

Pakistan’s military and its intelligence service, the ISI, have tried to argue with the ICI about their plans, saying they were trying to divert public sentiment with anti-India rhetoric to protect themselves from the question of corruption.

The ISI has repeatedly argued that over the decades, the military and its secret service, the ISI, have repeatedly fomented anti-India hostility. Many times they have even angered Pakistan’s Western allies for doing so. Foreign policy analysts have accused the military of playing a double game. As they continue to work with the Afghan Taliban, they have also received billions of dollars from the United States for military assistance.

The Pandora Papers is a prime example of the military’s involvement in corruption. Former army chief and former minister Raja Nadir Pervez has misused his organization to transfer shares to multiple offshore companies controlling the trust, the Pandora Papers reported. At the same time, it is pertinent to note that Parvez is one of the top leaders of Imran Khan’s PTI party and he has given illegal benefits to companies in the arms trade.

ICIJ also has the name of Major General Nusrat Naim, former DG of ISI’s Counter Intelligence Division. Shortly after his retirement, he registered a company with the son of former Pakistan Air Force chief Abbas Khattak (who also owns an offshore company).

According to leaked information, Shahnaz Sajjad Ahmed, daughter of former Pakistani military dictator Ayub Khan, has two apartments in London. Shahnaz did not respond to a request for comment from ICIG.

In the overall situation, it can be said that Imran Khan is now facing pressure from both sides. In addition to facing embarrassing situations at the international level, he is also facing severe reprimands from the opposition.

Shortly after the Pandora Papers were published, Ahsan Iqbal, secretary general of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), a leading opposition party, appeared before the media and said,

Later, PML-N spokesperson Mariam Aurangzeb told a news conference that “all his ministers and advisers loyal to Imran Khan, named in the Pandora Papers, must resign as soon as possible.”

Leaders of another opposition party, the Pakistan People’s Party, agreed. Sherry Rehman, one of the leaders of the party, sharply attacked Imran Khan and demanded accountability.
