The Chittagong City Police’s Counter Terrorism Unit has filed a chargesheet against BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in a case filed on the basis of a teleconference leaked during a student safe road movement three years ago. In the same charge sheet, a student leader of the time who was talking to Amir Khasru has also been accused.
The lawsuit was filed under both the Special Powers and Information Technology Act. However, at the end of the investigation, the Counter Terrorism Unit stated in the charge sheet that the allegations made under the Information Technology Act were not found to be true. The chargesheet was filed under the Special Powers Act, citing evidence of planned conspiracy and subversive activities against the state and government through telephone conversations.
On Wednesday (December 22) afternoon, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Counter Terrorism Unit of the CMP, Sanjay Guha, submitted the chargesheet to the Chittagong Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court. Former Chhatra Dal leader Barrister Milhanur Rahman Naomi has also been accused in the chargesheet.
When asked, Deputy Commissioner of CMP’s Counter Terrorism Unit Farukul Haque said, “A chargesheet has been filed in the court against the two including BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in Kotwali police station.” It only found evidence of allegations against the two. They have been accused. The court will look into the chargesheet and issue an order in this regard.
The case was registered at Kotwali Police Station under Section 15 (3) of the Special Powers Act, 1974 and Section 57 (2) of the Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006 (as amended in 2013). Deputy Commissioner of Police Farukul Haque said that the complaint filed under the Information and Communication Technology Act mentioned ‘informational error’.
Dia Khanum Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College, were killed in a bus crash on Airport Road near Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital on July 29, 2016. Then the students of different schools and colleges took to the streets demanding safe roads.
During the movement, a telephone conversation between Amir Khasrur Mahmud Chowdhury and the then Chhatra Dal leader Milhanur Rahman Naomi, who was staying in Comilla, spread on Facebook. In this, Amir Khasru is heard saying in his voice, he is telling the worker to come to Dhaka and come down with the people.
Zakaria Dastagir, general secretary of Chittagong Metropolitan Chhatra League, filed a case against BNP leader Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury at Kotwali police station on August 4 of that year. The case alleges sabotage and conspiracy against the state using electronic devices under Section 57 (2) of the Information Technology Act and Section 15 (3) of the Special Powers Act. In the case, Zakaria Dastagir claimed that the movement for safe roads was disrupted due to the provocation of Amir Khasru. The Awami League office in Dhanmondi was attacked because of his words.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury surrendered to the lower court on October 21, 2016 after the interim bail period of the high court in that case and he was sent to jail. He was in jail for more than a month.
Besides, Milhanur Rahman Naomi was also made an accused in the case filed at Kotwali police station on the request of the police, if his name was not in the statement of case. When he surrendered to a court in Chittagong on November 26, 2016, he was also sent to jail.
A case was also filed against the two at the Shahbagh police station in the capital at the same time. Police filed a chargesheet in the case a year and a half ago.
