As the planting season of garlic has started in the current season, sufficient quantity of garlic has started arriving in the hat bazaars of Natore district. Although 27 percent of the total production of the country was produced in this district last season, farmers are losing interest in garlic cultivation this time as they did not get fair price. Meanwhile, traders are claiming that farmers have been deprived of fair price due to import of extra garlic from abroad.

Farmers have been supplying sufficient quantity of garlic at Tebaria Hat in Natore Sadar Upazila since early morning. As the planting season begins, big garlic as well as seed garlic is supplied. However, there were less buyers to buy big garlic and seed garlic.

In the last season, the farmers of Natore have spent about 40,000 rupees for garlic production. Although 22 to 25 ounces of garlic is produced per bigha, at present one ounce of garlic is being sold at 800 to 1000 rupees. As a result, the farmers of the district have lost about 500 crore rupees and their interest in garlic cultivation has decreased in the current season.

Expressing frustration over the price of garlic, the farmers said that this time the price of garlic is very low. Everyone in the household is losing money. I used to sell garlic for 1,600 to 2,000 rupees, but now I have to sell it for 800 to 1,000 rupees.
