The US is considering sanctioning a unit or battalion of the Israeli military. The battalion is named Netzah Yehuda. It is one of the most notorious units of the Israeli military.
The US State Department has already recommended sanctions against the battalion. It is said that Washington will not sell arms to this Israeli military unit. Because there were credible allegations of human rights violations against the battalion.
Who is Netzah Yehuda? It is a special unit or battalion of the Israeli military (IDF). Separately, the battalion was formed in 1999 with ultra-orthodox Jewish soldiers.
According to the Netzah Yehuda Battalion website, the battalion employs about 1,000 soldiers. They are now deployed in the occupied West Bank. All Israeli citizens are required to serve in the military for at least two years. However, there is an exemption for ultra-Orthodox Jewish citizens.
Nevertheless, the Israeli government has long sought to recruit more ultra-Orthodox Jews into the armed forces. The result of that effort is Netzah Yehuda. But the battalion has come under controversy for a series of violent acts against Palestinians.
Its soldiers were also found guilty of torturing and torturing Palestinian prisoners. At the end of 2022, the US State Department started an investigation into the killing of an 80-year-old Palestinian-American named Omar Assad.
On Saturday (April 20), US news agency Axios reported that the US is considering banning Netzah Yehuda. According to the report of the Times of Israel, this is the first time that the United States is going to take such action against the Israeli military.
US media Axios News reports that if Netzah Yehuda is banned, its troops will not be able to use US weapons. Also, troops from this unit cannot train with US forces or participate in any US-sponsored activities.
Israeli officials have already condemned the US plan. They say that sanctions will be imposed on army units beyond the final limit.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday (April 20) night, “The IDF should not be sanctioned.” Our soldiers are fighting against terrorist monsters.’
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gavir, known as an ultra-hardline Jewish leader, said, “Sanctions against our troops would be the ultimate crossing.”
