A. League government works for the welfare of poor people: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, “Following the ideals of the father of the nation, the Awami League government has always been working for the welfare of the poor people of the country. After coming to power in the first term (1996-2001), the Awami League government introduced old age allowance and other allowances.

He said that the number of beneficiaries has been increased in all sectors of the social security perimeter, including disability allowance, widow allowance and freedom fighter honorarium. We will continue these programs for the welfare of the people.

The Prime Minister said this in a message on the occasion of ‘National Social Service Day-2022’ on Sunday (January 2).

The Prime Minister said, “I am happy to know that the Ministry of Social Welfare is celebrating ‘National Social Service Day-2022’.” This time the theme is ‘Success of Mujib Year, you will get all allowances at home’, which is relevant and timely.

Sheikh Hasina said the greatest Bengali of all time, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had given priority to the development of helpless, backward people from the very beginning of the reconstruction of war-torn Bangladesh. Introduced interest free microfinance program in 1984. Enacted the Child Protection and Development Act, 1974.

He said the present Awami League government has implemented a massive program for the welfare and development of the disadvantaged people including the destitute, poor, helpless children, disabled, adolescents, husband abused women and elderly persons in the last 13 years. In the current financial year, 56.01 lakh people are getting old age allowance, allocation is Tk. 3,444.54 crore. Widows and husbands are receiving 24.85 lakh people with allowance allowance, budget of Tk. 1,495.40 crore; Disability allowance is getting 20.06 lakh people, the budget is 1,620 crore. Besides, stipends are being provided to 1 lakh disabled students in 2021-22 financial year.

The Prime Minister further said, “In the year of Mujib, we pledged to hand over the money to the beneficiaries of social security program through GTP system.” We have implemented that commitment by providing 100% of the beneficiaries’ money in the financial year 2020-21 through mobile financial services and agent banking. We are providing financial assistance to improve the living standards of tea garden workers. Training, special allowances and education stipends are being provided to improve the living standards of the third gender, Vedas and marginalized people. Financial assistance is being provided for cancer, kidney, liver cirrhosis, stroke, paralyzed and congenital heart patients. Millions of people receive medical care and assistance every year through hospital social service activities.

Sheikh Hasina said, “I hope that the Ministry of Social Welfare will contribute to the golden Bangladesh of the dream of hunger-free Bangabandhu by implementing new programs for the protection and development of the rights of the destitute, helpless and disabled people of the country.”

The Prime Minister said, “I call upon all government and non-government organizations, organizations and people from all walks of life to work together to make Bangladesh a developed and prosperous nation by 2041.” I wish the overall success of all the programs taken on the occasion of National Social Service Day-2022. ‘
