BNP-Chhatra League tensions in Brahmanbaria, Section 144 issued

Tensions are running high in Brahmanbaria as the district BNP and district Chhatra League have called for a rally at the same place on Saturday (January 8) at 2pm. To avoid any untoward incident and chaos, the district administration has issued section 144 in the entire municipal area including Fulbaria Convention Center from 6 am to 12 noon tomorrow.

In a letter signed by Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Daulah Khan, all kinds of meetings and gatherings have been banned. Besides, a large number of police have been deployed in the municipal area since Friday (January 6) afternoon.

According to the police and concerned people, the BNP has called a pre-announced rally at the district level in the Fulbaria Convention Center area of Brahmanbaria town at 2 pm on Saturday. BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and other central and district level leaders are expected to be present. But at the same place, the district Chhatra League called a rally for the founding anniversary. Tensions are running high in the area as both sides are calling for a rally at the same place at the same time.

Hafizur Rahman Mollah Kochi, a member of the convening committee of the district BNP and former president of the district BNP, said, “We have applied to the district administration for holding a rally 15 days ago.” We have a meeting tomorrow.

We have already made all kinds of preparations. But suddenly I came to know that a rally has been called by Chhatra League here. We don’t know why he did it.

He alleged that just before the rally, district BNP convener Zillur Rahman, convening committee member and former district BNP general secretary Zahiru Haque Khokon and former organizing secretary Sirajul Islam Siraj and municipal BNP member secretary Mizanur Rahman and four other leaders and activists were taken into police custody. We still don’t know where they are. However, whatever the circumstances, the rally will be held tomorrow at any cost, he said.

Meanwhile, district BCL president Rabiul Hossain Rubel and general secretary Shahadat Hossain Shovon said the BCL had its founding anniversary on January 4. But due to the election of Union Parishad on 5th January, the founding anniversary of Chhatra League did not take place. Tomorrow they have announced to do it in front of the Fulbaria Convention Center of the city as per the application to the administration. They said they would resist at any cost if anyone tried to disrupt their gathering place.

Officer-in-charge of Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station Mohammad Emranul Islam said police were on high alert to prevent any party from creating chaos around the rally. He said he did not know about the arrest of the top four leaders of the district BNP.
