In Sirajganj, 1,207 affected families have not yet received compensation

Did not receive compensation
Private economic zone is being developed in Sirajganj. However, the residents have not yet understood the amount of compensation for houses, plants and housing. According to the authorities, about Tk 46 crore allocated for 1,208 affected families has been handed over to the district administration. On the other hand, the deputy commissioner says, it is not allowed to pay compensation for houses and crops on khas land.

In Sirajganj, about 1,042 acres of land in Sadar and Belkuchi upazilas have been allotted for the construction of private economic zone on the banks of river Jamuna. The work of filling the soil in the project area is almost at the final stage. Authorities say the money for the land acquisition has been paid to the landowners. However, locals complained that many people have not yet received compensation for their houses, plants and housing. Although some one-time grants were given to the people living on khas land, the compensation for houses and crops did not match.

In this regard, they said, here they promised that our money will be paid very soon. But nothing like that happened. We will move away only if we pay our dues. There is no money for houses and plants. Where are we going now?

Sheikh Monwar Hossain, project director of Sirajganj Private Economic Zone, claimed that Tk 48 crore allocated for compensation has already been paid to the district administration.

The DC office will finalize everything, he added. This is not what we are supposed to do. It’s not even supposed to handle us. We paid.

However, Sirajganj Deputy Commissioner. Farooq Ahmed says the process of paying compensation to landowners for their houses, plants and housing is underway. However, it is not allowed to give money to the people living in khas land.

He said that the Prime Minister had kindly given some money as a grant to the people living in the khas area. The money he has given is being distributed with the approval of the Ministry of Finance. It’s not all over. I am looking at the records of those who are coming. That process continues.

Landowners have also staged protests and human chains demanding compensation. Authorities say five lakh people will be employed in the Sirajganj private economic zone.
