Sino-US conflict escalates over Olympics

Diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics has escalated the Sino-US conflict. Beijing has strongly condemned Washington and threatened retaliation. The Chinese Foreign Ministry has said that the United States will have to pay a high price for this. Calling the boycott politics a “crazy decision”, analysts say it will not resolve the ongoing conflict. They urged both sides to sit down for talks.

Western nations, including the United States, have long been concerned about China’s human rights record. The Biden administration has come up with various threats, especially to stop the physical and mental torture in prisons, including the genocide against the Muslim Uighur community in Xinjiang province.

The Biden administration has announced a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, citing the latest human rights situation in China. The State Department and the White House have stated they will not formally attend the upcoming Olympics. Despite the diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics, US athletes will be able to compete as usual.

The Chinese public has reacted mixedly to the US decision. However, most Chinese think that the United States will not have much of an impact if it does not participate in the Olympics. One Chinese said that the Olympics are not a sport of a few countries. Countless countries will come here. So even if the United States does not come, there will not be much difference. Another said that the conflict between the United States and China over human rights issues and Taiwan would continue for a long time. Relations between the two countries will deteriorate further.

China’s foreign ministry says the decision will cost the United States dearly. At the same time, Beijing has warned of possible retaliatory measures.

International analysts, meanwhile, have described the boycott policy as a “crazy decision” by the United States. They say blaming will not solve the ongoing crisis. Former United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Eric Solheim says now is the right time to present China’s green technology to the world. This is possible especially through the Olympics. There is no alternative to this event if you want to inform people about green technology.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Wednesday (December 7th) that Australia was also joining the US decision to diplomatically boycott the Winter Olympics in Beijing, Reuters reported.

The decision comes in response to human rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang and other issues raised by Australia. However, Australian athletes will take part in those games.

Referring to Australia’s participation in the boycott, the Australian Prime Minister said: “I am doing this in the national interest of Australia. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there. Scott Morrison also accused China of denying it the opportunity to develop relations.

Meanwhile, China has condemned the US announcement and announced retaliatory measures. However, they have not given any details yet. The Biden administration on Monday (December 6th) announced a boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, citing China’s human rights record.

The Chinese public has reacted mixedly to the US decision. However, most Chinese think that the United States will not have much of an impact if it does not participate in the Olympics.

The Winter Olympic Games will be held in Beijing from February 4 to 20.
